Whether you’re working from home to avoid a commute, because you’re self-employed, or simply because you prefer it to an office setting, you’re part of a growing trend. There’s no denying that more and more companies are joining the global shift towards remote-friendly workplaces—and it is easy to see why! Working from home allows for a more flexible schedule, saves time by eliminating commutes, reduces office space costs, and increases productivity by eliminating office distractions.
This increase in remote workers has led to an increase in need for home offices. Home offices are important for several reasons. For starters, if you work from home, you need to set boundaries to avoid the “24-7” on the clock schedule. Having a dedicated workspace allows you to work when you need to, and check out when it is time. It also allows you to get into the right mindset to get things done. Home offices provide you a private area to avoid distractions around the home, such as television sets, telephone calls, loud children, or whiney pets.
Over the past 40 years, Interiors by Brown has designed countless home offices. We have created these spaces for remote workers, entrepreneurs, consultants, retirees, and everything in between. We have learned what works, what doesn’t, and most importantly, what helps increase productivity when it comes to home interior design for office spaces. Check out a few of our tips below…
1. Color Palette
Psychological studies prove that color impacts our mindset and emotions in major ways. The intensity of the color affects you as well.
What to Avoid: In general, it is best to avoid bright colors, as they are correlated with intense emotions and increased levels of stress and anxiety. Stark white tends to feel clinical and unwelcoming.
What to Try: Serene neutrals often provide a calming sensation, while darker colors can create a cozy vibe. Consider what colors you feel drawn to, and begin building a palette from there.
2. Lighting
Say “so long” to the fluorescent lighting of traditional office spaces! Headaches from these bright, buzzing overhead lights will thankfully be a thing of the past.
If possible, choose an office space with some natural light. Position your desk to face the windows, or in a location where your computer screen will not be affected. Translucent window shades or blinds can help reduce any glare without darkening the room.
Overhead lighting is important as well, whether or not you have natural lighting. Floor lamps and a desk light are beneficial for providing extra light during the evenings. When a room is too dim, you may end up straining your eyes. Dim lighting can even lead to feelings of depression.
Cool light (white bulbs) are better than warm light (yellow bulbs) for clarity of mind and maintaining concentration. Even if you usually prefer warmer lighting, it is best to stick with cool lights for your office space.
3. Storage and Shelving
A messy desk increases stress and decreases productivity. Make sure you include enough shelving, drawers, filing cabinets, and cupboards for your storage needs. Consider your workflow – what comes in, where will it live while it’s being worked on, where will it go when it’s complete? Don’t forget to plan storage for reference materials you’ll need as well.
4. Chair Selection
Choosing the right chair for your home office is huge. Invest in a chair that is comfortable and adjustable. Your neck and back will thank you!
5. Accessorize and Personalize
Make the space your own! Another great part about working from home is that you can decide how you want it to look and feel. Your home office space should reflect your personality. Hang pictures, artwork, and decor you like on the wall. Surround yourself with items that motivate you. These personal touches will help keep you energized and inspired throughout the day.
